In comparison to Canada, the US lags behind. The current use of broadband in
the US is 29.1%, and is predicted to only reach a penetration level of 41%
by 2006. Reasons for this are a difference in availability, a more
aggressive marketing campaign in Canada, and the fact that Canada’s
definition of broadband is a speed in excess of 64kbps, a lower threshold
than other countries.
Within Canada, British Columbia has the highest penetration of high-speed
connections, at 77% of all connections. In terms of online buying,
high-speed households make up 80% of all online purchases in British
Columbia and Alberta; overall, 72% of online purchases in Canada come from
homes with a broadband connection.
